Revenue Model Comparison

Revenue Share

Recycler sells recovered materials and shares a percentage of proceeds with you.

Pros: Upside when commodity prices rise. Aligns recycler incentives with material quality.

Cons: Revenue fluctuates with market. Lower guaranteed income. Need to track commodity prices.

Best for: High-volume sites (500+ pallets/mo) with clean, consistent material streams.

Flat Rate per Pickup

Fixed fee per pickup regardless of material value. May be a cost or a rebate depending on volume.

Pros: Predictable budgeting. Simple accounting. No commodity price exposure.

Cons: Miss upside in strong markets. May overpay when volumes are low.

Best for: Sites with moderate volumes or mixed-quality materials.

Haul-Away (Cost)

You pay the recycler to remove materials. Common for low-value or contaminated streams.

Pros: Still cheaper than landfill. Provides diversion documentation for ESG.

Cons: No revenue. Need to minimize contamination to avoid premium pricing.

Best for: Low-volume sites, scrap-only materials, or high-contamination environments.

Pickup Logistics Planning

Volume Thresholds

Most recyclers require minimum pickup volumes. Typical: 1 full trailer (24-30 pallets) or 1 roll-off container. Below minimums? Consolidate across nearby sites or accumulate to threshold.

Dock Access

Document dock door dimensions, height restrictions, turn radius for 53-ft trailers. Identify staging areas accessible by forklift. Note hours of operation and appointment requirements.

Staging Area

Designate dedicated space for each material stream. Pallets should be stacked by grade, corrugated baled or bundled, wrap compacted. Separate from inbound receiving to avoid confusion.

Contact Protocol

Assign primary and backup contacts per site. Establish communication method (email, phone, app) for pickup scheduling, no-shows, and quality issues. Response time SLA: within 4 hours.

Seasonal Adjustments

Volume spikes during peak seasons (Q4 retail, summer food/bev). Pre-negotiate surge capacity with recycler. Consider temporary additional staging or more frequent pickups.
