Most specification questions about IBC totes have a clean answer and one complication. Dimensions are genuinely standardised, because the footprint is tied to the pallet. Capacity is standardised in name but not in practice, because nominal capacity is a classification rather than a fill level. Weight is not standardised at all, because it depends on the manufacturer, the pallet type, and how much moisture a wooden pallet has taken on.

IBC tote capacity
How many gallons is an IBC tote?
The two standard sizes are 275 gallons (1,041 litres) and 330 gallons (1,249 litres). Of the two, 275 is by far the more common in North America.
The 275-gallon figure derives from the metric standard of 1,000 litres, which converts to about 264 gallons; the tanks are built slightly above that to accommodate the required headspace. This is why the number looks arbitrary.
Nominal capacity versus usable capacity
Here is the complication, and it is the source of most confusion about IBC capacity: you cannot put 275 gallons of liquid into a 275-gallon tote.
Nominal capacity describes how the container is classified. Actual fill has to leave headspace — outage, or ullage — so the liquid can expand with temperature without stressing the tank.

The IBC-specific rule is the one that usually governs. Rather than specifying a fixed deduction at the point of filling, it caps fill so that the container is no more than 98% full when the contents reach an average temperature of 50°C (122°F). The logic is temperature-based: what matters is the volume after the liquid has warmed, not the volume you poured.
The general outage requirements for bulk packagings set a minimum of 1% for most materials and 5% for materials poisonous by inhalation. The 5% figure circulates widely as though it applied to everything — it does not, and quoting it as the universal minimum is the most common error in writing on this subject.
The practical working fill is an operating buffer applied in many filling operations, tighter than any of the above. It exists for liquids filled warm, which contract as they cool and expand again if ambient temperature rises, and to keep the liquid level out of the tapered dome at the top of the bottle, where a rising level causes problems for immersion pumps and mixers and increases the chance of overflow during agitation.
None of these figures is wrong. Quoting one when someone needed another is a common way to end up with a mess on the floor.
Transport versus static storage
Worth separating, because the rules above come from transport regulations. They apply to containers offered for transportation.
A tote used purely for static storage on site, never going onto a public road, falls outside that framework. What governs instead is the chemical supplier's guidance and basic physics — most importantly, leaving enough room that freezing contents have somewhere to expand. For a tank that may see a freeze, deliberately underfilling well below any of the figures above is the sensible choice, since water expands roughly 9% when it turns to ice.

Note the coincidence in the last column: a 330 US gallon tote holds about 275 imperial gallons. This causes real confusion in mixed-market documentation and is worth checking whenever a figure looks like it is in the wrong column.

This is not coincidence and it is the most useful single fact on this page. It means IBC totes fit standard racking, standard pallet positions, and standard handling equipment without special provision. Anywhere a pallet goes, the footprint of a tote goes.
Height is the only dimension that varies between the two standard capacities.

Height is the dimension most likely to catch people out, because it is the only one that differs and because it interacts with things people forget to check — rack beam spacing, container door height, mezzanine clearance, and the lift height of whatever is going to move the tank.

Fitting through doorways and into vehicles
The practical questions the dimensions above are usually being asked in service of:
Standard single doorway. A 36-inch doorway will not pass a tote in any orientation — the narrow dimension is 40 inches. Double doors or a roller shutter are required. This surprises people planning to put a tote in a garage or basement.
Pickup truck bed. The 48 × 40 footprint fits a full-size pickup bed, but check the width between the wheel arches on your specific vehicle before committing — this is where it fails, not on length.
53-foot trailer. Geometrically, 26–30 units fit in a single tier depending on orientation. In practice, weight becomes the binding constraint long before space does: at roughly 2,400 lb each, a full trailer of water-filled 275-gallon totes reaches typical payload limits at around 18–20 units. Shipping containers. Approximately 8–10 units in a 20-foot container and 18–20 in a 40-foot container, single tier. Confirm against your specific container's internal dimensions before booking.
Rack storage. Standard pallet racking accommodates the footprint. Confirm beam spacing against the 46-inch or 53-inch height, plus clearance for the fork entry — the extra 7 inches on a 330-gallon tank is what stops it fitting racking sized for a 275.

Manufacturers typically quote tare weight with a tolerance of around ±5% on top of all this. If your calculation is sensitive — payload planning near a legal limit, for instance — weigh the units.

The commonly quoted figures of 2,400 lb and 2,900 lb assume filling to nominal capacity. At practical fill levels the real numbers are lower, which matters when you are close to a payload limit.

Dense liquids are the case that catches people out. A tote of concentrated acid weighs nearly twice what the same tank of water does — which matters for handling equipment, floor loading, and above all for stacking, where the load on the tank underneath scales directly with density.
Floor loading and forklift capacity
A single full tote of water places roughly 180 lb per square foot on the floor beneath it (2,400 lb spread over the 13.3 sq ft footprint). Two tiers doubles that to around 360 lb/sq ft.
That figure is comfortably within a typical ground-floor industrial slab and comfortably outside what most mezzanines and upper floors are rated for. Check before storing full tanks anywhere other than at grade, and see stacking load limits and safety before adding a second tier.
For handling, a forklift rated at 2,500 lb will lift a full 275-gallon tote of water but leaves no margin — and the rating applies at a specified load centre, which a tall tote will exceed. A 3,000 lb machine is the sensible minimum, more for dense liquids.
Materials and construction
Bottle: High-density polyethylene, resin identification code #2. Chosen for chemical resistance across a wide range, low weight, and the fact that it can be blow-moulded in one piece with no seams to fail. HDPE alone does not make a tank food-safe — see food grade verification.
Cage: Galvanised tubular steel. Carries all stacking load — the bottle carries none of it. Cage construction differs between manufacturers, particularly in the number of horizontal members, which affects both load capacity and resistance to deformation.
Pallet: Wood, plastic, or steel. Wood is cheapest and most common, and also the component most likely to fail first in outdoor or damp storage.
Valve and fittings: Thread type varies by manufacturer and is the detail most often overlooked when buying — see valve sizes and fittings.
The design logic is a division of labour: the plastic provides chemical compatibility and low weight, the steel provides structure and stackability, and the pallet provides handling. Each ages independently, which is why service life is best assessed component by component.
How specifications change on used totes
Published specifications describe new tanks. Several of them drift in service, and this is the part that catalogue pages do not cover.
Pallet weight increases. Wooden pallets absorb moisture. A tank stored outdoors for several seasons weighs measurably more empty than its published tare.
Deformed cages change the effective footprint. A frame knocked out of square by a forklift strike may still be serviceable but no longer stacks reliably or sits cleanly in racking. The nominal 48 × 40 stops being true in practice.
Rebottled tanks may not match published heights. A reconditioned cage fitted with a new bottle can end up on a different pallet type than the original, changing overall height by an inch or two. Where rack clearance is tight, this matters.
Wall thickness reduces. Chemical attack and UV degradation both remove effective wall material, and neither is visible. This does not change the published spec but it does change what the tank can actually withstand.
The practical rule: when buying a batch, measure and weigh a sample rather than relying on nominal figures, and work the 12-point inspection checklist on each unit. When the figures matter — payload, rack fit, floor loading — they matter enough to check.
