IBC Tote Valves and Fittings: Sizes, Adapters and Replacement
There is no universal standard for the outlet on an IBC tote. Thread types differ between manufacturers and between markets, which is why so many adapters bought online turn out not to fit.
So the first step is not buying anything. It is working out what you actually have.
Identifying your thread type
Most IBC outlets fall into one of three families:

The outlet itself is typically 2 inches nominal bore regardless of which thread surrounds it. Manufacturer and construction details that go with each thread family are in the IBC tote specifications.
Measuring without a thread gauge
Use calipers on the outside diameter. Around 60 mm with a visibly coarse, widely spaced thread is S60×6. Around 60 mm with fine, closely spaced threads is 2″ NPT or BSP.
To separate NPT from BSP, sight along the thread. NPT is tapered — measure the diameter at both ends of the threaded section and you will find a difference. BSP is parallel and measures the same throughout.
NPT and BSP look identical and do not fit
Both are 2 inch nominal, both fine-threaded, both metal. They have different thread angles and different pitches, and forcing one into the other cross-threads both.
The expensive mistake: metal NPT into plastic S60×6
This is the single most common and most damaging fitting error, and it is worth understanding before you attempt anything.
An S60×6 outlet is a coarse buttress thread moulded in plastic. A 2″ NPT fitting is a fine, tapered thread in metal. They are close enough in diameter that a metal NPT fitting will start to engage — and once turned under force, the fine tapered metal thread shears straight through the coarse plastic one.
The plastic threads do not deform and recover. They are cut away. What you are left with is an outlet flange that will never seal again, on a tank that was otherwise perfectly serviceable. This damage is not repairable, and it is why identifying the thread before buying anything matters more than any other advice on this page.
If a fitting requires force to start, stop. Correct fittings thread by hand for the first few turns.
Connecting a garden hose to an IBC tote
The most common domestic requirement, and straightforward once the thread is identified.
You need an adapter from your outlet thread to GHT (garden hose thread, ¾″). These are sold as S60×6-to-GHT, 2″ NPT-to-GHT, and so on — buy the one matching what you measured, not the one that looks about right.
Sealing. PTFE tape on tapered threads. Parallel threads seal on a gasket or O-ring at the face rather than on the thread itself, so check the adapter came with one and that it is seated.
Do not overtighten. Plastic outlets strip easily. Hand-tight plus a modest turn with a wrench is sufficient; if it still weeps, the sealing surface or the gasket is the problem, not the torque.
Flow and pressure: manage your expectations
This is where most garden hose setups disappoint, so it is worth stating plainly.
A tote feeds by gravity, and gravity produces roughly 0.43 psi per foot of height. With a tank on the ground, the water level sits perhaps three to four feet above the outlet — around 1.5 psi at the tap, falling steadily as the tank empties.
That is enough to fill a watering can or run a soaker hose. It is nowhere near enough for a sprinkler, a pressure nozzle, or anything with a spray pattern.
Two options: raise the tank, which buys you 0.43 psi per foot of elevation and needs a genuinely solid platform given a full tote weighs around 2,400 lb (see stacking and load limits) — or fit a pump, which is the realistic answer for anything requiring actual pressure.
Camlock fittings for IBC totes
Size: 2 inch, matching the nominal outlet bore. You will still need an adapter between your outlet thread and the camlock body.
Types. Camlocks come in lettered configurations, and the two that matter here:
Type A — male adapter with a female thread
Type B — female coupler with a male thread
Type C — female coupler with a hose shank
Type D — female coupler with a female thread
Type E — male adapter with a hose shank
Type F — male adapter with a male thread
In practice: the tank side takes an adapter that mates with your outlet thread, and the hose side takes the corresponding half. Decide which half lives permanently on the tank, then buy its counterpart for the hose.
Materials. Polypropylene is cheap and adequate for water and mild chemicals. Aluminium suits fuels and oils but not many acids. Stainless steel handles almost everything and costs accordingly. Match the material to the contents, not to the price.
How to remove an IBC tote valve
Drain first — and verify
Not "mostly empty". Fully drained. A partially full tote will empty itself through the opening the moment the valve clears, at a rate that is genuinely difficult to stop.
Have a container ready regardless. There is always residual liquid in the outlet neck.
Find the retaining mechanism
Most IBC valves are secured by a retaining ring, clip, or collar at the flange rather than being simply threaded in. Look for a locking ring around the base of the valve body, or a clip that must be released before anything will turn.
Trying to unscrew a valve that is mechanically retained will damage the flange. Find the retainer first.
Freeing a seized valve
Old valves seize, particularly after chemical service or several years outdoors:
Penetrating fluid at the joint, given time to work
Strap wrench rather than a pipe wrench — it spreads load rather than concentrating it on one point of the plastic
Steady increasing force, not shock loading
Never apply heat. HDPE deforms well below the temperature at which it would help, and a heat-distorted flange is unrecoverable
Protect the flange
The threaded flange moulded into the bottle is the part that cannot be replaced. Valves are cheap and available; the flange is the tank.
Every technique above is chosen to keep force off the flange. If the valve will not come free, a damaged valve on a working tank is better than a free valve on a scrap one.
How to replace an IBC tote valve
Match the replacement to the thread type you identified — same trap as before, same consequences. For a tank used in regulated transport, match the manufacturer's specification too, not just the thread; the reason is in the next section.
Check the flange while it is exposed. Damaged or worn threads mean the tank will never seal properly, and the correct conclusion at that point is that this is a tank for rebottling, not for a new valve.
Fit a new gasket. Reusing a compressed gasket is the most common cause of a replacement valve that still weeps. For drinking water, the gasket and valve both have to be potable-rated — see food grade verification.
Hand-tight, then a modest turn. Plastic threads strip under torque that feels entirely reasonable on a metal fitting.
Test before filling. Part-fill with water, leave for an hour, and check the flange, the valve body, and the outlet.
Routine maintenance versus repair
Widely misunderstood, and usually in the wrong direction — people assume replacing a valve is a bigger deal than it is.
Under the regulations governing containers used to transport regulated liquids, replacing a valve, cap, or gasket with a part meeting the manufacturer's specification counts as routine maintenance, not repair. It does not trigger a retest, and the tank stays in service.
Repair means something structural: welding a damaged steel cage, or replacing the plastic inner receptacle. That does require a leakproofness test before the tank returns to regulated service — the test applies air at a gauge pressure of at least 20 kPa (2.9 psig), with leaks identified by soap solution or heavy oil at the joints.
Two practical consequences:
Use the right part. The distinction rests on fitting a component that meets the original specification. Bolting on whatever valve was in the shed is not the same thing, and on a tank used for regulated transport it is worth being careful about.
Do not be talked out of a straightforward job. A leaking valve on a sound tank is a routine maintenance item. It does not require recertification, it does not invalidate the marking, and it is not a reason to write off the tank.
Separately, note that the leakproofness test is required before first use and at each 30-month periodic retest regardless — that cycle runs whether or not you have touched the valve.
When replacement is not the answer
If the flange threads are damaged, if there is cracking in the bottle around the outlet, or if the valve has been forced and the sealing face is chewed, a new valve will not fix it. The tank needs rebottling or retirement.
Connecting two or more IBC totes
Parallel connection: shared volume
Joining tanks at their outlets makes them behave as one larger tank. Levels equalise across all connected units, and you draw from a single point.
What you need: an adapter on each tank, a manifold or tee arrangement, hose or pipe rated for the contents, and — importantly — an individual ball valve on each tank. Without them, servicing or removing one tank means draining the entire system.
Levels will equalise. This is the intended behaviour, but it means the system fills and empties as a unit and you cannot use one tank as a reserve while drawing on another.
All tanks must sit at the same height on level ground. Different elevations mean the lowest tank carries the pressure of the whole system, and the highest empties first.
Series connection: overflow cascade
Filling the first tank until it overflows into the second, and so on. Standard for rainwater harvesting.
Connect from the top of one tank to the top of the next, sized generously — overflow arrangements have to handle peak inflow, and an undersized connection turns the first tank into a fountain during heavy rain.
Support and load
A connected system is a large volume of liquid in one place. Two 275-gallon totes full of water are approaching 5,000 lb across two pallet footprints. Level, solid ground is not optional, and any elevated stand has to be engineered for the load rather than improvised.

A leaking valve is not a dead tote
Worth stating on its own, because it drives a lot of unnecessary write-offs. The valve is a consumable component costing a fraction of the tank, and replacing one takes minutes.
Tanks are regularly discarded, given away, or priced as scrap because they leak at the outlet — when the bottle is clear, the cage is square, and the plate is legible. If you are buying, a failed valve on an otherwise sound tank is an opportunity rather than a defect — valve operation is point 10 of the 12-point inspection checklist. If you are selling, replacing it first will more than repay the cost.
Nor does replacing it create a compliance problem. As set out above, fitting a specification-compliant valve is routine maintenance rather than repair — the marking stands and no retest is triggered. There is no regulatory reason to leave a tank sitting with a failed valve.
