What are IBC totes made of?
Three components, each doing a different job.
The bottle is high-density polyethylene, resin identification code #2. HDPE is chosen for broad chemical resistance, low weight, and the fact that it can be blow-moulded in a single piece with no seams or joints to fail. Wall thickness typically runs between 2.0 and 3.2 mm depending on manufacturer.
The cage is galvanised tubular steel. It carries all the structural load, including the entire weight of anything stacked above — the bottle bears none of it. Cage construction varies between manufacturers, particularly in the number of horizontal members.
The pallet is wood, plastic, or steel, and matches standard pallet dimensions so the container works with existing handling equipment.
The design logic is a division of labour: plastic provides chemical compatibility, steel provides structure, and the pallet provides handling. Note that both sizes share an identical footprint — 48 × 40 inches, matching a standard GMA pallet. The only dimensional difference is height. This is more useful than it sounds: it means either size occupies the same floor space and works with the same racking and handling equipment, with the 330 simply standing seven inches taller.
One important caveat on capacity: you cannot fill a 275-gallon tote with 275 gallons of liquid. Nominal capacity is a classification, not a fill level — headspace must be left for thermal expansion. The practical working fill is closer to 250 gallons.

What are IBC totes used for?
Almost anywhere liquid needs to be stored or moved in quantities too large for drums and too small for a fixed tank.
Chemical industry — the original and still the largest application. Acids, alkalis, detergents, surfactants, and industrial process liquids.
Agriculture — fertiliser and crop treatment solutions, livestock water, irrigation supply, fuel storage for machinery.
Food and beverage — bulk ingredients such as syrups, oils, concentrates, and juices, using containers dedicated to food service.
Construction — site water, curing compounds, admixtures, and washdown supply.
Water treatment and supply — treatment chemicals, and water storage itself for both potable and non-potable use.
Waste handling — collection and transport of liquid waste streams.

Types of IBC totes
Composite IBC — plastic bottle in a steel cage. This is the standard type and what nearly everyone means by "IBC tote".
Metal IBC — stainless or carbon steel throughout, for aggressive substances, elevated temperatures, or applications where plastic is unsuitable. Considerably more expensive and much less common.
Folding and collapsible IBC — designed to reduce return freight when empty. A niche product.
Flexible IBC — bag-type containers for dry bulk rather than liquids. Different product, sometimes confusingly given the same acronym.
Beyond construction type, containers are also distinguished by history:
New — never filled
Reconditioned — cleaned, inspected, and returned to service
Rebottled — an inspected steel cage fitted with a brand-new bottle
Used, as-is — sold in whatever condition it arrives
That last distinction matters more than the construction type for most buyers, and it is worth understanding before purchasing.
New versus used IBC totes
Used totes are substantially cheaper than new, and for a large proportion of applications they are entirely appropriate. The question is which applications.
Where used works well. Non-potable water, irrigation, industrial chemicals compatible with the tank's history, waste collection, static storage, ballast. In these uses, condition is what matters and a sound used tank performs identically to a new one.
Where used requires care. Anything involving food, drinking water, or the transport of regulated liquids. Here the tank's history matters as much as its condition, and history is established through documentation rather than inspection.
Condition grading. The industry works from a voluntary scale — Grade A for near-new condition, Grade B for sound tanks with cosmetic wear, Grade C for functional tanks with significant wear, and rejection for anything structurally compromised. There is no legal standard behind these terms and criteria vary between suppliers, so ask what a given seller means by them.
Rebottled tanks sit outside that scale. An inspected cage with a new factory bottle performs as new, and because the cage never contacts the product, it carries no contents history — which means a rebottled tank can be used for food applications at well below the price of new.

Are IBC totes food grade?
New totes are typically manufactured from food-grade HDPE. Used totes are a different question, and the answer is more restrictive than most buyers expect.
A grade describes the physical condition of a tote. Food-grade status describes its history. These are independent characteristics.
HDPE is semi-porous and absorbs substances into the wall itself, where cleaning cannot reach them. The practical consequence is that food-grade status is lost permanently the first time a tank holds a non-food product — no cleaning procedure restores it, and a visually flawless tank with an unknown history is not food-grade.

How long do IBC totes last?
Between five and fifteen-plus years, depending almost entirely on where the tank lives and what it holds.
The three components age separately. The HDPE bottle typically manages 5–10 years outdoors and 15+ years under cover, with UV exposure the usual limiting factor. The steel cage lasts 10–20 years. Wooden pallets are often the first component to fail, at 3–7 years in damp conditions.
Sitting alongside these is a boundary that has nothing to do with wear. Tanks used to transport regulated liquids are generally retired from that service at around five years from manufacture. US regulations set inspection intervals — external checks and a leakproofness test every 30 months, internal inspection every 5 years — rather than a service life limit; the five-year cap on the plastic bottle comes from international rules and from manufacturer and reconditioner policy.
That regulatory limit is worth understanding, because it explains the used market. A tank that ages out of regulated transport service has typically not worn out at all — it remains fully serviceable for water, industrial fluids, and storage, and that is how a great many sound tanks reach the secondary market.

Can IBC totes be stacked?
Yes — the steel cage exists specifically to make stacking possible.
Empty totes stack four to five high, usually limited by stability and headroom rather than strength. Full totes are generally limited to two tiers. Used tanks should be stacked one tier lower than the equivalent new tank, since published ratings describe new cages.

Cleaning and maintenance
Cleaning an IBC is constrained by access — a six-inch fill opening, with ribs and corners inside that a straight jet of water never reaches. Effective cleaning depends on getting solution into those dead zones and giving it time to work, which is why industrial reconditioning uses rotating spray heads.
A standard procedure runs: drain fully, wash the exterior, apply hot alkaline cleaner, follow with an acid stage where mineral deposits are present, rinse thoroughly, dry, and clean the valve separately as a component. The valve is the most commonly skipped step and a genuine contamination trap.

What can you store in an IBC tote?
Most water-based liquids, most acids and alkalis, oils, detergents, fertiliser solutions, and food products where the tank's history permits.
Two exclusions matter most:
Gasoline — no. Standard plastic IBCs are not permitted or suitable for Class I flammable liquids. Plastic cannot be grounded, so static charge generated during transfer accumulates with no path to earth, inside a container that has an ignitable vapour space above the liquid.
Diesel — usually yes. Diesel is a combustible rather than flammable liquid and does not form an ignitable vapour space at ordinary temperatures, so it falls under different rules. Local quantity limits and containment requirements still apply.

Transporting IBC totes
A full tote weighs around 2,400 lb and behaves differently from ordinary freight. IBCs have no internal baffles, so liquid moves freely inside the bottle and generates impulse loads against restraints when the vehicle brakes.
Basic practice: strap to the steel cage, never over the bottle; a minimum of four ratchet straps; blocking at the front to prevent forward movement; and re-check the straps after the first few miles, since they settle.
