About Used Wooden Spools

A used wooden spool has held cable, wire, rope or hose and been emptied, often returned through a distributor's deposit program or sold on. To count as used rather than damaged, its flanges must be free of delamination, cracks and missing sections, its drum round and its arbor hole intact and square.

The flange is where reels fail, so it is the line between used and damaged. The difference from new is documentation: the original spec is often gone, so measure the flange, drum, traverse and arbor yourself, and check that a flange repair has not narrowed the traverse.

Used reels suit rewinding, storage and job-site pay-off when the drum clears your cable's bend radius. For heavy cable, ask what the reel carried before, because a reel built for lighter product can fail under a heavier load.

What to Look For When Buying

  • Flanges with no delamination, cracks or missing sections
  • Drum round and undamaged
  • Arbor hole intact, square and the size your stand takes
  • Traverse not narrowed by a flange repair
  • No rot at the flange rim or where the flange meets the drum

Ideal For

  • Rewinding cut lengths of cable or wire
  • Job-site pay-off where the drum clears the bend radius
  • Storage of hose, rope and cable
  • Internal moves of wound product

Buying Tips

  • Measure all four dimensions yourself if the spec is not marked
  • Compare the drum diameter with twice your cable's minimum bend radius
  • Ask what product and weight the reel last carried
  • Check for stencilling that marks the reel as another company's returnable property
