Construction types
2-Wall (Double Wall)
Two layers of fluting. The most common and most economical gaylord. Compare double-wall boxes on the ECT or burst rating on the maker's certificate, not on the wall count.
3-Wall (Triple Wall)
Three layers of fluting. The usual heavy-duty gaylord: Uline lists its 1,100# triple-wall 48x40x36 box at a 1,500-lb weight capacity.
4-Wall
Sold as heavy-duty for industrial and manufacturing loads. Sellers count walls differently, some by fluted layers and some by paper plies, so compare 4-wall boxes on their ECT or burst rating.
5-Wall
Sold for the heaviest loads. At least one maker builds its 5-wall from three liners and two flutes, the same construction as double-wall board, so the wall count alone does not say how strong the box is. Ask for the ECT or burst rating.
