About New Moving Boxes

A new moving box is an unused corrugated carton in one of the standard moving sizes: small 16 x 12 x 12 in, medium 18 x 18 x 16 in, large 18 x 18 x 24 in and extra-large 24 x 18 x 24 in. Specialty boxes include the double-wall dish pack, the wardrobe box with a hanging bar and the telescoping picture box.

New boxes are square, dry and at full strength, and a set comes in matched sizes that stack evenly in a truck. Like-new and used boxes may be the same sizes, but they have already been loaded, stacked and taped at least once.

Buy new for dish packs, wardrobe boxes and picture boxes, where construction and fit protect fragile contents, and for the small boxes that will carry books and other dense items.

What to Look For When Buying

  • Size matched to contents: small for books, larger for light bulky items
  • Double-wall construction for dish packs and fragile contents
  • Hand-holes if boxes will be carried by hand
  • Specialty boxes for dishes, hanging clothes, mirrors and art
  • Matched sizes that stack evenly in the truck
