About New Plastic Drums

A new plastic drum is an HDPE drum that has never been filled, with the manufacturer's UN marking molded in: 1H1 for a tight-head drum with two bungs, 1H2 for an open-top drum with a removable lid. Common sizes are 15, 30 and 55 gallon.

Compared with a reconditioned drum, a new drum has no prior contents to trace. That matters more for HDPE than for lined steel, because some products absorb into or stain polyethylene and can carry into the next fill.

Buy new for most pharmaceutical and regulated food fills, which require first-use drums, and when you need a specific size, color or rating. For compatible industrial liquids, a reconditioned drum with a valid UN marking does the same job.

What to Look For When Buying

  • UN marking matches your head type, packing group and specific gravity
  • Head type: 1H1 tight-head for liquids, 1H2 open-top for solids
  • HDPE compatible with your contents on a compatibility chart
  • Size and height fit your fill line and pallet pattern
  • Bung threads or lid ring match your fittings

Ideal For

  • Pharmaceutical and regulated food first fills
  • Corrosive liquids that attack bare steel
  • Hazmat liquids within the UN rating
  • Fills where drum weight matters for handling

Buying Tips

  • Keep HDPE below its heat limit, and choose steel for hot fills
  • Read the full UN marking, including the tested specific gravity
  • Ask for the resin and FDA compliance statement for food fills
  • Choose steel instead for solvents that permeate HDPE
