Used equipment has normal wear from service and is sold as it stands, usually without a manufacturer's warranty. Hours, repairs and condition vary unit to unit, so the machine is judged by inspection rather than by the grade name.
OSHA 1910.178 requires forklifts to be examined before each shift, and the same pre-shift checklist is a sound start for a buyer: forks, chains, mast, hydraulics, brakes, steering, horn, lights and the capacity plate. A pallet jack's pump should hold a raised load without drifting down. A wrapper or strapper should run a full cycle with working controls, sensors and film or strap path.
Compared with refurbished, nothing has been replaced for you. Plan for a service, fluids and wear parts before the machine goes to work, or arrange a third-party inspection before purchase.
What to Look For When Buying
- Every function tested under load, with no hydraulic leaks
- Fork blades not worn below 90% of original thickness at the heel
- Chains, mast rollers and tilt cylinders free of damage and play
- Capacity plate present and matching any attachment fitted
- Battery age, cell condition and charger for electric units
