About Used Plastic Crates

A used plastic crate has been through regular service: scuffs, label residue, faded colour and small chips on the rims are normal. It still carries its rated load, and its walls, base and stacking corners are intact.

Where like-new crates behave as they did when moulded, used crates vary crate to crate. Some nest cleanly; some have corners worn enough to wobble in a stack or jam a conveyor, and lots often mix models and generations. Pool operators retire crates when cracks appear or walls no longer lock rigid, and those two faults separate a used crate from scrap.

Used crates fit manual handling, internal moves, storage and one-way shipments where the crate may not come back. Sort a lot on arrival and set aside any crate with a crack in the base or corners.

What to Look For When Buying

  • No cracks in the base, corners or handle openings
  • Stacks level and nests without wobbling
  • Collapsible walls still lock rigid
  • No residue, odour or staining from previous contents
  • Models in the lot identified if they must stack together

Ideal For

  • Manual material handling and internal moves
  • Storage and organization
  • One-way shipments where crates may not return
  • Parts bins and work-in-progress totes

Not Recommended For

  • Automated conveyors or wash lines without testing
  • Food contact when prior contents are unknown

Buying Tips

  • Ask whether the lot is one model or mixed
  • Plan to sort the lot and pull cracked crates on arrival
  • Ask what the crates carried before, especially for food use
