A used plastic pallet has visible service wear: scuffs, chipped edges, gouged runners or small deck cracks away from the load path. It has no cracks through runners, legs or blocks and does not rock on a flat floor.
Compared with like-new, a used pallet's ratings are less certain. Plastic cannot be re-nailed or re-boarded the way wood is, so a crack only grows, and runner damage lowers racked capacity first. Used lots also mix more: models, types and colors from different pools often arrive in one load.
For floor stacking, manual handling and one-way export, those limits rarely matter, and the pallet still needs no ISPM-15 treatment. For beam racking, identify the model and inspect each pallet, or keep used pallets on the floor.
What to Look For When Buying
- No cracks through runners, legs or blocks, and no rocking on a flat floor
- Runner and fork-entry wear that could lower racked capacity
- Mix of models, types and sizes in the load
- Deck residue or odor from previous contents
- Warping from heat exposure
Ideal For
- Floor stacking and manual warehouse handling
- One-way export shipments
- Internal storage and staging
- Wet or outdoor areas where wood would absorb moisture
Not Recommended For
- Beam racking without a confirmed model rating
- Automated lines that need uniform pallets
Buying Tips
- Ask whether the load is one model or mixed
- Keep used pallets out of beam racking unless the model is rated for it and each pallet passes inspection
- Ask what the pallets carried before any food-adjacent use
- Use them for one-way export: plastic needs no ISPM-15 mark
