About New Gaylord Boxes

A new gaylord is a corrugated bulk box that has never been filled, supplied flat and set up where it is used. The box maker's certificate on a bottom flap shows the wall count, the rated burst or edge crush strength and the gross weight limit. Most are built on the 48x40 footprint at 36 or 48 inches tall, in single, double or triple wall.

Against a like-new (once-used) gaylord, the gain is certainty rather than much extra strength. The certificate rating applies as printed, the walls and flaps have seen no moisture or compression, and the interior is clean for food-adjacent or pharmaceutical loads. New is also the only way to get a custom size, printing, an octagonal shape or a specific bottom style such as full-flap.

For a box that will be filled once and leave with its contents, a sound like-new or used gaylord of the same wall count usually does the same job.

What to Look For When Buying

  • Certificate stamp with wall count, strength rating and gross weight limit
  • Full-flap bottom if the box sits on forks or holds dense material
  • Footprint and height that match your pallet and trailer
  • Wall count matched to load weight and stack height
  • Octagonal rather than square if the load tends to bulge the walls

Ideal For

  • Food-adjacent and pharmaceutical bulk storage
  • Custom sizes, printing or octagonal designs
  • Heavy loads that need a certified triple-wall rating
  • Programs that reuse boxes over several trips

Buying Tips

  • Choose single, double or triple wall from the load weight, then confirm the limit on the certificate
  • Specify full-flap bottoms for dense loads or fork contact
  • Order flat and set boxes up at the point of use
  • Use a poly liner for food-adjacent loads
