About New Pallets

A new wood pallet has never been in service. Every board and fastener is original and the dimensions match the build specification. Most new pallets in North America are built to the 48x40 GMA footprint, either as stringer pallets (2-way or partial 4-way entry) or block pallets (true 4-way entry).

Against a Grade A (#1) used pallet, the gain is consistency rather than extra capacity. A new load holds the same deck height, board spacing and footprint across every pallet, which is what automated conveyors, AS/RS systems and retailer programs that specify new stock need. New is also the only way to get a non-standard size, lumber species or deck board count.

For export, a new pallet can be treated and stamped with the IPPC mark when it is built. Check that the mark reads HT, DH, MB or SF; a KD (kiln-dried) stamp is not an ISPM-15 mark.

What to Look For When Buying

  • Original lumber throughout, with no repair boards, plugs or plates
  • Dimensions and deck board count that match the build spec
  • IPPC mark reading HT, DH, MB or SF if the load crosses a border
  • Stringer or block construction that matches your forklift and jack entry
  • No splits or loose knots at fastener points

Ideal For

  • Automated lines and AS/RS that need exact dimensions
  • Retailer or customer programs that specify new pallets
  • Export loads that need a fresh ISPM-15 mark
  • Non-standard sizes that used stock cannot match

Not Recommended For

  • One-way shipments a Grade A or Grade B pallet would carry as well

Buying Tips

  • Send the size, lumber species, deck board count and board thickness with the request
  • Ask for the racked rating if the pallets will sit in beam racking
  • Specify heat treatment at order time if any of the load may be exported
  • Allow build lead time for non-standard sizes

Common Misconceptions

  • Kiln-dried (KD) is not heat-treated (HT); only an IPPC mark satisfies ISPM-15
  • A new pallet is not rated higher than a sound Grade A pallet of the same design; the rating comes from the design and lumber
