About New Wood Crates

A new wood crate is built to order: the builder frames it to your cargo's footprint plus clearance for blocking and bracing, in open slatted or closed sheathed construction, and sizes the corner posts and base to the load. The frame, fasteners and skids are exactly as specified.

Fit is the difference from a used crate. A used crate was built around someone else's cargo, so buying used means accepting its dimensions and strength as they are. A new crate can be ordered with ISPM-15 treated lumber, a skidded base for forklift or pallet jack entry, or knock-down hardware so it can return flat.

Choose new when the cargo is heavy, irregular, fragile or leaving the country, or when no used crate matches its size. Give the builder the cargo's dimensions, weight, center of gravity and how it will be lifted.

What to Look For When Buying

  • Inside dimensions equal cargo footprint plus room for blocking
  • Frame lumber and member sizes matched to the load weight
  • Skidded base with fork entry from the sides you need
  • Open slats for ventilation or closed sheathing for weather
  • IPPC mark on every solid-wood part if the crate will be exported

Ideal For

  • Machinery and equipment moving by freight
  • Fragile or high-value cargo
  • Export shipments needing ISPM-15 marked wood
  • Oversized or irregularly shaped parts
  • Repeat shipments in knock-down crates

Buying Tips

  • Send the cargo's dimensions, weight and center of gravity with the request
  • Say whether the crate will be lifted by forklift, pallet jack or crane
  • Ask for heat-treated lumber at build time if any shipment may go abroad
  • Consider knock-down construction if the crate will come back empty
  • Ask for the builder's drawing and rated load before approving the build
