About Used Wood Crates

A used wood crate has made at least one trip and is resold as built. Because most crates are made to fit one piece of cargo, the question is whether its inside dimensions and frame suit yours, not only whether it is in good repair.

Compared with a new crate, nothing about a used one can be specified: the size, lumber, base and any export marking are what the original builder chose. Compared with an export-grade crate, a used crate carries no promise of ISPM-15 compliance. It may bear an IPPC mark, but a repair with unmarked wood makes it non-compliant.

Used crates suit domestic freight, one-way shipments and storage where the cargo fits with room for blocking. Check the corner posts, base runners and fasteners before loading anything heavy: the frame carries the load, and the sheathing does not.

What to Look For When Buying

  • Inside dimensions fit your cargo with room for blocking and bracing
  • Corner posts and base runners solid, with no splits or rot
  • Fasteners tight and no boards missing from the frame
  • Fork entry on the base clear and undamaged
  • IPPC mark on every solid-wood part if it will cross a border

Ideal For

  • Domestic shipments of cargo that fits an existing crate
  • One-way shipments where the crate will not return
  • Storage of parts and equipment
  • Internal moves between sites

Not Recommended For

  • Export shipments without a verified IPPC mark
  • Cargo heavier than the crate previously carried

Buying Tips

  • Measure your cargo first, then compare inside dimensions, not outside
  • Ask the seller what weight the crate last carried
  • Ask for photos of the base and corner posts, not only the outside
  • Treat an old IPPC mark as void if any solid board has been replaced
  • Plan to re-block and re-brace the interior for your cargo
