A dirty IBC tote is structurally sound but holds more than drainable residue: set or solidified product, sludge, heavy film or staining that a rinse will not remove. It needs a hot wash or chemical clean before it can hold anything else.
The difference from a used tote is how much cleaning stands between the tote and its next fill. A used tote may need a rinse, while a dirty tote needs a wash line, and some residues, such as cured resins or adhesives, will not come out of HDPE at all. In that case the cage and base may still be worth rebottling.
Dirty totes are mainly bought by reconditioners and rebottlers. Anyone else should know how they will clean the tote and dispose of the residue before buying.
What to Look For When Buying
- What the residue is and whether it can be washed out of HDPE
- Cage and base sound under the dirt
- Valve free to turn and not seized by set product
- Residue that is hazardous waste and needs regulated disposal
- Bottle free of cracks or swelling from the prior product
