About Used IBC Totes

A used IBC tote has been emptied of its last product and sold as it is, with no rinse, wash, test or repair. Expect residue in the bottle and around the valve, and wear on the cage and base from its time in service.

The grade sits below rinsed and above dirty. A used tote still drains and is structurally whole, but nobody has touched the interior, while a dirty tote holds enough residue that it needs heavy cleaning.

Used totes make sense for refilling with the same product, for buyers with their own wash line, and as feedstock for reconditioners. Everything else rests on the prior contents: a tote that held a pesticide or petroleum product should never go to any water-contact use.

What to Look For When Buying

  • Last contents named by the seller and compatible with your use
  • Residue level: drained liquid, not set product or sludge
  • Cage welds, cross-members and base intact
  • Valve and fill cap present and closing
  • No cracks, bulges or heat damage in the bottle

Ideal For

  • Refilling with the same product
  • Reconditioner feedstock
  • Buyers with an in-house tote wash
  • Non-contact uses such as secondary containment

Not Recommended For

  • Food, feed or potable water use
  • Hazmat shipping without retest and re-marking

Buying Tips

  • Ask for the last contents by name, and the last three if they changed
  • Budget for washing or rinsing before a different fill
  • Inspect a sample in person or by photo before a full load
  • Ask for the safety data sheet of the last product if it was a chemical
