About #1 Premium Lumber

#1 Premium is No.1 dimension lumber, most often Southern Yellow Pine graded under SPIB rules, that a mill has sorted to tighter limits than the base No.1 grade, typically less wane and fewer or smaller knots. The stamp reads No.1 or a mill-specific premium designation, and the structural design values are those of the stamped grade.

Against #2 Prime it has smaller knots and a cleaner appearance; against Select Structural it sits one agency grade lower. What the premium sort adds is mostly straight, clean edges and faces rather than extra rated strength.

In packaging, it earns its place where boards are visible, printed on, or must seat flat, such as display crates and exposed skid runners.

What to Look For When Buying

  • A No.1 grade stamp from SPIB or another recognized agency
  • Little or no wane on edges and corners
  • Small, tight knots with no loose or missing knots
  • Straight boards with minimal crook or twist

Ideal For

  • Display and presentation crates
  • Skid runners that must seat flat
  • Crate frames that are printed or stenciled
  • Boards with a visible finished face

Buying Tips

  • Ask the mill what its premium sort excludes beyond the No.1 rule
  • Use the stamped grade, not the sort name, for design values
  • Reserve it for visible or precision parts of a build
