About #2 Standard Lumber

#2 Standard is plain No.2 dimension lumber, graded under NLGA, WWPA or SPIB rules without any extra mill sort. It allows larger knots and more wane than No.1, within limits the agency rule sets for each size.

The practical gap to #2 Prime is appearance and edges: expect some boards with wane on a corner or a knot near an edge. Structurally the two carry the same No.2 design values. Against #3 Utility, No.2 has fewer and smaller defects and is still a rated structural grade.

For most pallet decks, stringers and crate frames built to a load, No.2 is the default grade. Sort out the worst wane pieces for lead boards and edge-nailed parts.

What to Look For When Buying

  • A No.2 grade stamp from NLGA, WWPA or SPIB
  • Wane and knot size within the No.2 rule for that size
  • Splits at the ends that would open under nailing
  • Species group on the stamp (SPF, SYP, Douglas fir-larch)

Ideal For

  • Pallet stringers and deck boards
  • Crate frames built to a rated load
  • General blocking and bracing
  • Skids for moderate loads

Buying Tips

  • Look up the agency rule for the size you buy, not a general limit
  • Pull high-wane boards out for blocking instead of lead boards
  • Compare species as well as grade when strength matters
