About A-A (Premium Both Sides) Lumber

A-A plywood is a sanded panel with A-grade veneer on both the face and the back under the PS 1 veneer grades. A veneer is smooth and paintable, and only neat, parallel-to-grain repairs are allowed, so both sides present a finished surface.

Against A-B, the difference is the back: A-B allows a B veneer with tight knots and circular plugs on one side. Against the sheathing grades (CDX, BCX, ACX), A-A is a finish panel, not a structural sheathing product.

In packaging, A-A is only worth specifying when both sides of the panel will be seen, such as display crates, cases opened at a trade show, or panels printed on both faces.

What to Look For When Buying

  • A-A on the panel trademark with PS 1 and the bond classification
  • Smooth, sanded faces on both sides with neat repairs only
  • Exterior or Exposure 1 bond if the crate will see moisture
  • Flatness and edge voids on the sample panels

Ideal For

  • Display crates with both faces on show
  • Cases printed or painted on both sides
  • Presentation and exhibit packaging

Not Recommended For

  • Standard crate sheathing or pallet decks

Buying Tips

  • Specify A-A only when both faces are visible
  • Choose A-B or A-C when one face is hidden inside the crate
  • Check the bond classification against the shipping route
