Browse ListingsAbout A-B (Premium/Good) Lumber
A-B plywood has an A-grade veneer on the face and a B-grade veneer on the back under PS 1. The face is smooth and paintable; the back is a solid surface that allows tight knots, shims and circular repair plugs.
Compared with A-A, the back is less refined but still solid, with no open knotholes. Compared with A-C, the back is noticeably better, which matters when the inside of a case is seen or has to be smooth against the product.
For packaging, A-B suits instrument and equipment cases where the outside is printed or painted and the inside face contacts a finished product or lining.
What to Look For When Buying
- A-B on the panel trademark with PS 1 and the bond classification
- A smooth A face with neat repairs only
- A solid B back with plugs and tight knots, no open holes
- Delamination or voids at the panel edges
Ideal For
- Equipment and instrument cases
- Crates with a printed exterior and smooth interior
- Lined cases for finished goods
Buying Tips
- Put the A face out and the B face against the product
- Choose A-C when the inside surface does not matter
- Confirm Exterior or Exposure 1 bond for humid routes
